Accommodation/ArrivalInternational House: (For most participants) A number of four bedroom shared apartments have been reserved. These contain four individually locked bedrooms (one with a double bed and 3 with a single bed), a communal lounge, self-contained kitchen, separate toilet and separate shower room. The apartments are fully equipped with a refrigerator, microwave, telvision, toaster, iron, etc. Each bedroom has a telephone for incoming calls and calls between rooms. Outgoing calls are not possible. Access to the internet is available from a computer in the common room, computer lab or wirelessly from the dining room. Bed linen and towels are provided. Casual meals are available by buying vouchers. The cost is $5.00 for breakfast, $6.00 for a sandwich lunch, $7.00 for a cooked lunch and $10.00 for dinner.The cost for accommodation at International House will be at most $650 for the month. If you are being supported, the appropriate amount will be paid directly to International House on your behalf and subtracted from the amount you are to be reimbursed into your home bank account. If you are not being supported, then you will need to pay our secretary Yolanda Harbinson by bank cheque (made out to Maths and Stats, University of Melbourne, C/- A/Prof. Paul A. Pearce) or credit card (MasterCard or Visa). International House is open during the hours 8.30 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. If you arrive outside these hours or on the weekend, you should call the Duty Tutor on the house phone to the left as you enter the main entrance on the number 731. If you expect to arrive between 11.00 p.m. and 8.00 a.m. then special arrangements need to be made for your arrival. If you need any assistance you can call Paul Pearce on (03) 9482 4010 (home) or (03) 8344 4470 (office). Carlton Melbourne College: A limited number of rooms are available. Twin share rooms are $150 per person per week. Single rooms are $200 per week. This is student style accommodation with shared bathroom facilities. A refundable security deposit of $200 is required and payable on arrival at CMC. Payment in full should be made directly to CMC before departure. TravelVisas: For all advice on visas to enter Australia you should refer to your nearest Australian Immigration Office. For those of you who qualify, the Electronic Travel Authority or ETA is the most convenient option and is available over the internet.Melbourne Airport: Travelling to or from Melbourne Airport you can go by Taxi or by Bus operated by Skybus. A taxi costs about AUD$40-50 one way whereas the bus costs AUD$15 one way. The terminus for Skybus is at the Southern Cross station (Spencer Street). From there you need to take a taxi or tram to the University. Reasonably priced domestic flights within Australia can be purchased with a credit card over the internet with either Virgin Blue or JetStar. At the UniversityMap of Melbourne University: The AMSI Centre is located in Barry Street in the southern precinct (south of Grattan Street) in the ICT Building 105 at P14. However, all activities will take place in and around the Department of Mathematics and Statistics which is located between Masson and Monash Roads (adjacent to Swanston Street) in the eastern precinct in the Richard Berry (Mathematical Sciences) Building 160 at G20. International House 470 is located off the map 700 meters north of A9 along Royal Parade. Carlton Melbourne College is located at M21 on the corner of Swanston and Grattan Streets (adjacent to the Nursing School Building 348 at N21).All lectures will be held in Old Geology Theatres 1,2 at G19, Architecture-103 at F18 or Physics Hercus Theatre at E20. All participants will be assigned to an office or the shared Nanson Lab (MS212) in the Mathematical Sciences Building. Wherever convenient, participants are encouraged to bring their own laptop computers but computers are available at all desks (Macs running OS X in the offices and PCs running Windows XP in the Lab). The electricity supply in Australia is 240V, 50Hz with three pronged plugs. So as not to disturb people who are working, private discussions should not take place in the Nanson Lab (MS212). Instead Room MS215 has been reserved as a discussion room between 9.00-17.00 each day during the workshop. It has many round tables and whiteboards. Telephone numbers at the University are of the form 8344 XXXX. To dial another extension in the building you simply dial 4 XXXX. From interstate the number is 03 8344 XXXX. From overseas the full number is +61 3 8344 XXXX. For security, please leave your office/Lab locked at all times when the office is not occupied. Also, as a precaution, please do not leave valuables sitting on your desk. Supplier Request Forms: To avoid delays in reimbursing expenses into your home bank account, all participants being reimbursed expenses are asked to complete either an Overseas Supplier Request Form or a Local Supplier Request Form. Please complete the relevant form and fax it to Yolanda Harbinson (Y.Harbinson@ms.unimelb.edu.au) at 61 3 8344 4599. We need your name (Supplier Name), address and contact information as well as the details of your bank account for Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). The IBAN/RIB/Swift+BIC identifier is required for overseas visitors and the BSB identifier is required for local visitors. Please remember to sign the form. Practical InformationGetting Around Melbourne: You should consult a good city map and a good train and tram map. More detailed information can be found at Yarra Trams and MetLink. Tram tickets can be be purchased on the trams by coin-only operated ticket machines. City saver (single trip) tickets can be purchased for travel to and from the city. Two hour and all day tickets are available for longer trips and these tickets are also valid on trains within the appropriate zones.Melbourne Climate: The mean daily maximum in Melbourne in January is 25.8 degrees Celsius. The mean daily minimum is 14.2 degrees Celsius. The weather can fluctuate wildly with days over 40 degrees and days that are cold and windy. The lowest recorded January minimum is 5.5 degrees. The most reliable weather forecast can be found at the Bureau of Meteorology. Due to a deepening hole in the ozone layer, the UV radiation levels are extreme in Melbourne in January. A hat, sunglasses and 15+ suntan lotion are strongly recommended for any period in the sun to avoid sunburn and heatstroke. The electricity supply in Australia is 240V, 50Hz with three pronged plugs.
